Remi Pigeyre

Rémi Pigeyre is a French potter/ceramist based in Burgundy.

He creates unique pieces in stoneware, either turned or pinched, decorative or for use with tea or sake, inspired by the Japanese pottery tradition; a tradition that values rusticity, irregularities and asymmetries, imperfections and ‘accidents’ in shaping or firing, contributing to the aesthetics and spirit of Wabi Sabi.

His creations offer the eye and touch a ‘landscape’ of textures, colours and surface details, here a grain of molten material, there a crack or a bloom of earth, which make them unique pieces.

To achieve this, he introduces or preserves impurities, sand and raw minerals in his materials, which cause imperfections and irregularities on the surface. The turning process is ‘deconstructed’ to reveal asymmetries, off-centring and finger or tool marks. The glazes are applied by pouring to take advantage of drips and disparities in thickness and overlapping.

The purpose of these processes and gestures is to promote, on the basis of a chosen and controlled aesthetic, a natural and free expression of the material, revealed by firing.
