Ambre Cardinal

Ambre Cardinal is a Marseille-based artist and designer, trained at the Decorative Arts in Strasbourg and later at the Royal College of Art in London. Her poetic work explores the body in motion through delicate metal sculptures whose fine lines shape and define space. Exhibiting internationally since 2015, she presented her first immersive installation at Milan Design Week in 2022.

In my quest for balance, I hand-shape metal and bring to life “body sculptures” that evolve into “jewels of space.” Fascinated by shifts in scale, I design each detail like a piece of jewelry, increasing the interaction between body and sculpture once it is placed in space. The suspended object acts as an extension of the body and connects us to gravity. Abstract forms dance lightly through space and structure the void.

Both playful and introspective, my work questions the relationship between the individual and space, and with otherness. My sculptures, gestural traces of bodies in motion, dialogue with their environment. I seek the harmony created between two elements facing one another. My creations have given me the space to establish my own limits. This line that defines, connects, separates, and cuts across confronts contradictory realities of fusion.

An apparently cold material, brass—infinitely malleable—transformed into a kinetic play, becomes a fluid body that diffuses light. How can such a dense material evoke the aerial? This question resonates with my research on the interstice, the space between things which, far from being empty, is instead a place of resonance and transformation.

My precious objects offer a space dedicated to intimacy.

My creative process unfolds within an extended, almost meditative temporality. The jewelry-making and metalworking techniques I use impose a slow rhythm that inscribes the hand in a form of ritual. Each sculpture is born from prolonged observation of nature and invites us to slow down, to cultivate a gaze that cherishes the subtle. Through metal, I express the fragile beauty of balance.

Often conceived as installations, my works invite an experience that engages a physical and poetic relationship with space. The viewer is not a simple observer, but a body in presence. I seek to negate the mass of the sculpture in order to convey the physical sensation of elevation. Oscillating between the tangible and the intangible, the void drawn by my fine lines creates a delicate silence and calls for visual meditation.
