Here, elsewhere. Time is no longer… only the authenticity of passions sparked by unique pieces, with Thierry Grundman as their messenger. A globe-trotting antiques dealer with an uncompromising eye, he has spent the past 25 years scouring the world in search of wonder and rarity, amassing a collection of nearly 15,000 pieces of furniture and objects dating from the 9th to the 20th century.
In 1998, he founded Atmosphère d’Ailleurs. After India and then Indonesia, he went sourcing in China, where he discovered vernacular elm furniture with magnificent textures and proportions—too often hidden under a shiny honey-colored lacquer. He tried to have them stripped on site, but the result always remained too yellow. No matter: he returned with his cabinetmaker, with whom he succeeded in revealing that “driftwood” tone—the hallmark of rural Chinese furniture that he so admired, and which he showcased at the MAISON&OBJET fair as early as 2000.
Until 2005, he was the only one. But soon others followed, and then more still, until it became a major trend in interior decoration. Drawn to the wabi-sabi aesthetic long before he even knew of the philosophy, Thierry Grundman witnessed its rise, its dilution, and eventually its overuse to the point of becoming indigestible.
Today, he seeks to return to the essence—the quintessence—of this humble and discreet beauty, marked by patina and the passage of time. This is why he has opened the Domaine de Quincampoix—his 2,000 m² showroom and exhibition space—to artists, gallerists, and creators who share his taste for an aesthetic at the very opposite of ostentation.
Thus was born the idea of the Wabi-Sabi Lab: a unique event born from the desire to bring together a collective of aesthetes who embrace timeless beauty. “The more I work on it, the more this event feels indispensable. It answers an inner necessity—to open up—and a societal necessity.”
Calling upon Daniel Rozensztroch was an obvious choice. Daniel is both an inveterate hunter, a collector, and a scenographer of great talent. He could have written “the little dictionary of imperfection”—we share the same attachment.
Very quickly it became clear that the Wabi-Sabi Lab would be its manifesto: an engaged, selective, and demanding event. We embrace this fully.
Together, we dismissed the idea of a traditional fair. No rows of stands, no “exhibitors,” but rather actors, committed to an aesthetic they defend and promote. With his talent, Daniel will bring them into dialogue through an expansive scenography—creating harmony in the diversity of pieces, materials, and forms of artistic and artisanal expression.
WHY YOU SHOULD EXHIBIT?
An event with a different, more immersive form, designed to stimulate envy.
AN UNPRECEDENTED EVENT
We know it, you know it, exhibiting, acting and thinking collectively on the same aesthetic will make us all grow.
ACTING AND THINKING COLLECTIVELY WILL MAKE US ALL GROW
Wabi-Sabi Lab will shine a spotlight on everyone’s world. By pooling the files (without communicating them) and social networks of 40 players, we multiply your visibility and our ability to mobilize the public, specifiers, collectors and the press by a factor of 40.
Our professional buyers are always looking to make their projects stand out from the crowd, to give them a little extra soul. They come to the Wabi-Sabi Lab for your unique pieces and your know-how. From all over Europe!
CHANGE SCALE: FROM OBJECT... TO THE PROJECT
The other idea behind Wabi-Sabi Lab is to bring together players and architects, interior designers or project owners, enabling the former to change scale by moving from the object… to the project.
To achieve this, we have a great asset: our partnership with Material Bank, a startup with about 11,000 qualified architect and decorator clients, and plans to sign up 20,000 to 25,000 by the end of November. The company will host a VIP architects’ dinner during the event and promote the event to its clients.
A strong communication campaign is underway, combining public relations, press coverage, and social media. A press event, a private opening, and media partnerships are planned to attract a highly targeted audience.
A SPOTLIGHT ON YOUR BUSINESS
A portrait and photos of each participant’s work will be featured in our press releases, on the website, and on the event’s Instagram account.
- A social media kit will be provided to you ahead of the event.
- A social media expert will prepare ready-to-use posts for each participant, both before and during the event. Just imagine the impact of a post published simultaneously across 40 Instagram accounts. Atmosphère d’Ailleurs alone has 48,000 followers.
It’s up to you to dare…
DARE
We are sometimes reluctant to participate in a first edition for fear of the unknown, financial risk… there are so many possible reasons… to each his own.
For my part, I have no doubts. I know this event makes sense. It’s rare that I’m so sure of success.
We have the customers, the specifiers, the collectors. I know this because I have organized so many exhibitions of world antiques at the Domaine de Quincampoix.
We also have our own files and the press. We already have publishing contracts. How could all this not find an audience?
But this success, which I’d like to share with you, is also due to your participation, your contribution as a committed player.
