Giulia Zanvit

My practice seeks to create without exploiting, to build connections and reveal invisible forces at work. Consuming as little as possible—bending down to pick up a stone, a stick, a flower—preserves my freedom and reveals nature and the ordinary as treasures. My works are built through assemblage, like a child making a shelter from what is at hand. To assemble is to bring worlds into dialogue; to seek balance is to hold the fragile beauty of things, free to come apart over time.

Giulia Zanvit, born in 1991 in Alès, graduated from ESBA–MO.CO Montpellier with a DNSEP degree in 2014. She lives and works in the Cévennes region in her home-studio between the river and the forest.

Her multidisciplinary practice cultivates her sensitive relationship with the Earth. Her process is guided by the natural materials she encounters and gathers along the way. Her regular immersions “in the minority of the Living”, as Baptiste Morizot puts it, force her to feel ever more strongly her belonging to the plural world that does not belong to us. At the same time, her work seeks to reveal the wonder of the natural world as it is, and how our relationship with matter, natural elements and time can transform pain and fragility into strength and learning. Fascinated by the movement inherent in the process of transformation, she seeks to sublimate its fragile points of balance. Her mobiles collaborate with natural elements—air, sunlight—and speak to us of impermanence, cycles, and new beginnings.

His work is exhibited in France and internationally in various museums, art centres and galleries. Notably at the Röhsska Museum (Sweden), the Fabre Museum (Montpellier), the Porte B Gallery (Paris), Françoise Besson (Lyon), Gr_nd (Berlin), and the Kunstquartier Bethanien art centre (Berlin). She participates in the Nîmes Contemporary Art Triennial and the Lyon Art Paper fair. Her research, closely linked to natural environments, develops during long residencies in various locations: in the garden of the Factatory (Lyon), at the MAC in Pérouges (Dombes) and on the island of Naxos at the Chapelle Saint-Antoine (Greece). The Greenline Foundation, committed to forest protection, and the Germaine Revel Foundation, sensitive to the link between art and care, have acquired several of his works.
